College and Department List of Specifications

College and Department List of Specifications

If you have declared a major, check the College and Department List of Specifications below or contact your department to confirm the configuration you will need. If your College or Department is not listed below you should contact them directly to confirm their specific computer requirements. A complete list of Colleges and Departments can be found at: http://www.vt.edu/academics/academic-departments.html. Many colleges and departments do have additional requirements and suggestions beyond the university baseline.

The University Baseline Specifications are the same as those listed for University Studies/Undecided.

Select your intended major from the list below to see your specific requirements:

University Studies / Undecided

The University Studies/Undecided does not have a Platform preference and does not have a Format preference. Some majors do require a specific platform and/or format. Please review the requirements for the programs you are considering when choosing you new computer. You should bring the best system you can reasonably afford to Virginia Tech. The baseline computer requirement specifications are listed below. These are minimums and apply to Windows and Apple Macintosh systems.

If you currently own a computer that falls within the range in the table, you may want to start off at Virginia Tech with that computer. Be advised that your major may require that you get a better computer during your academic career, especially if you plan to start with a low-end model. Some departments require a particular (usually higher) configuration. Please check the College and Department specifications or call your department to confirm the configuration you will need. Before changing majors, students are advised to determine if their computer will continue to satisfy the requirements of their new major. Consultation with an advisor in the new major is strongly recommended.

Department of Dairy Science

The Department of Dairy Science requires the PC Platform and does not have a Format preference (laptop or table it acceptable).  Dairy Science majors use industry-specific software that is PC-specific and does not work well in Bootcamp or other "PC parallel" software on Macs.  For this reason the Department of Dairy Science requires its student to use the PC Platform.

Department of English
The Department of English suggest the Macintosh Platform and requires the laptop Format (tablet is not acceptable). We suggest that students who have not already purchased computers consider using the Macintosh platform because of its flexibility, ease of use, relative freedom from viruses, and durability. If students are double majoring or minoring, then they should take into consideration the software and hardware requirements in their second department.

Students who purchase or bring a Macintosh computer must have a dual operating system as some classes require specific software packages which will only run on a PC.  If you choose to purchase a Macintosh, you must also run Windows in Boot Camp or as a Virtual Machine in Parallels or VMWare Fusion so that you can run the software packages required which only run on a PC when needed.
