Information on anti-virus protection can be found at www.antivirus.vt.edu. You should create bookmarks to these links in your Web browser and visit the site frequently to find out the latest information security and anti-virus protection.
VTNet
VTnet is a software package written at Virginia Tech and distributed on CD-ROM that should be obtained and run on your computer before plugging into the network. VTnet CD automatically runs and performs the following functions for you:
- Helps obtain Internet access by configuring your Ethernet or modem (modems used off campus only).
- Helps secure your computer from computer hacks and viruses.
- Helps in configuring your e-mail client to use Virginia Tech.
- Provides a collection of software packages for current Virginia Tech students or for University owned computers.
OS Updates
In order to keep your Windows or Macintosh Wireless computer system secure you MUST perform regular updates to your operating system. This will ensure your computer has the latest service packs and critical security patches to protect your computer and keep it running smoothly. Windows Update can be found at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com or may be accessed from the Start Menu on your computer. Accessing System Preferences on your Macintosh computer and then selecting Software Update can update Mac hardware and install security patches. Information for the Mac updates can also be found at www.apple.com.
