Services
Each residence hall room is provided with high speed Ethernet network portals. The University Computing Support staff can help you connect your computer to the network. Your PID allows access to various online services.
University Computing Support
4Help provides support and responds to technical questions from students, faculty and staff regarding computer software, operating systems, and services available
at Virginia Tech.
For more information on the services we provide, see http://www.computing.vt.edu/4help/). You can contact us at (540) 231-HELP (4357) or on the web at (http://4help.vt.edu/.) The VT Operations Call Center is available 24x7 to reset passwords and answer general questions. If you have a more technical computer question, the operator will create a problem ticket for the Help Desk. The Help Desk staff will respond to you during their normal business hours. You should also take the opportunity to search for answers to your questions on the web by going to http://answers.vt.edu.
Get Connected, a service provided by 4Help, employs approximately 65 students in the residence halls during fall move-in. The Get Connected staff provides guidance to students who need assistance getting their computers connected to the Virginia Tech network and access to services like e-mail. For additional information visit the web at http://www.computing.vt.edu/getconnected.
Personal Identifier (PID)
A Personal IDentifier (PID) is a unique ID created by each enrolled student. For example John Smith would probably have the PID "jsmith." When the PID is combined with the e-mail
suffix "@vt.edu," an e-mail address is formed. For example, if John Smith had "jsmith" as his PID, his e-mail address would be jsmith@vt.edu. Students will be mailed information
on how to self-generate their PIDs prior to orientation for the fall semester at Virginia Tech. For more information visit the website www.hokiespa.vt.edu
and click on the link titled "New Students."
Ethernet/Internet Access
Each student who lives in a residence hall has access to an Ethernet port that provides direct high-speed access to the Internet. The university also provides free anti-virus
software on the VTnet CD.
