What You Will Need
Laptop or tablet computer (If you have declared a major, check the College and Department List of Specifications, or contact your department for a list of their computer requirements.)
Wireless Network Card
Wireless network service is available in all residence halls and most instructional and on-campus public areas. The university's wireless network supports the IEEE 802.11ac (Wi-Fi) standard in the vast majority of service locations. 801.11ac is compatible with all prior Wi-Fi standards. For optimum operation, devices should be 802.11ac capable.
If you have difficulty connecting, contact 4Help by filling out the form at http://4help.vt.edu or by calling 231-HELP (-4357).
NIC/Ethernet Card - (Optional)
To optionally use residence hall or campus Ethernet connections, your computer should have a built in 10/100/1000Base-T Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) or an external adapter with an RJ-45 connector.
25-foot Ethernet cable - if using Ethernet Card.
Eduroam wireless service is available in all residence hall rooms. Students are not permitted to connect personal wireless routers. Each residence hall room has one active 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) wired network portal. Residents may purchase an inexpensive Ethernet switch to provide more wired network connections.
In the residence halls only, users can connect devices such as streaming devices, smart TVs and game consoles to the wireless network by following the instructions available at 4Help.
Connection via wireless - Printers SHOULD NOT BE connected to any Virgina Tech wireless network to ensure quality performance of the network. Please use a wired USB connection.

In order to help streamline the university’s support for our students and to ensure that all students have access to the latest versions of the Microsoft productivity suite and operating system, all incoming undergraduate and transfer students are required to purchase the Incoming Undergraduate bundle. This Microsoft Enrollment for Education Solutions software can only be obtained through Virginia Tech Software Service Center due to licensing differences with other sources.
The Enrollment for Education Solutions license includes Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus (for both Windows and Macintosh), the Microsoft Operating System and client access licenses for connecting to Microsoft servers. Students are entitled to upgrades at no additional cost on these products as long as they remain an undergraduate at Virginia Tech. Students who own Macintosh systems will have access to the Mac version of Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus as well as the Windows version of Office 365 Pro Plus and the Windows Operating System.
We realize that if you purchase a new computer that it will ship with Windows 10 so you are probably asking why you need to purchase the Operating System again. Bundle purchases receive Operating System and Office Suite upgrades when they become available at no additional charge. Additionally support for these applications is streamlined as technicians refine support programs. Students will gain access to Office 365 Pro Plus during summer orientation. Access to the operating system will be available beginning August 15, 2018. Programmatic software for students majoring in Architecture, Building Construction, Business, Engineering, and Landscape Architecture will be available for distribution beginning August 15, 2018. All further information can be found at the Software Service Center.
