2021-2022 Baseline Minimum System Requirements
For All Incoming Undergraduate Students
Laptop required, tablet acceptable
Note: Do not purchase M1 Macbooks, Surface Pro X (with ARM processors) or Chromebooks. They do not meet the requirement and will not run all engineering software. Only systems with Intel processors are guaranteed to run the required software.
Windows 10 (64-Bit)
Minimum Intel 9th Gen i5 or i7; Recommended Intel 10th Gen i7
16 GB or higher
Minimum 500 GB SSD (Solid State Drive); Recommended 1 TB SSD
Built-in or external with built in microphone (headset/earbuds recommended)
802.11ac Wi-Fi (802.11ax recommended)
3 Year on-site service support with accident damage coverage (4 Year is highly recommended)
Software Suite: Students are required to purchase the Incoming Undergraduate Software Bundle through the Virginia Tech Software Service Center. More information can be found at Student Software Center.
Included Products: Microsoft Windows Operating System with Microsoft Office 365 Pro Plus
Platform: MAC OS and Windows
Eligibility: Valid while enrolled in undergraduate classes at Virginia Tech
Note: Office 365 Pro Plus can be downloaded and installed on up to five machines and Office mobile apps can be installed on up to five mobile devices.
Any backup method of choice including cloud-based services like Google Drive.

Discrete/dedicated (such as NVIDIA or AMD)
Apple Intel-based MacBooks are acceptable and must meet the same hardware requirements as a Windows system, with 16 GB of RAM, 500 GB SSD, and the latest possible Intel processor (Apple's New M1 ARM Processor will not run all your software.) These hardware requirements are necessary because you will need to run software under the Windows operating system. More information about bringing an Apple MacBook.
